Raster graphics editor Photoshop, developed by brothers Thomas and John Knoll in 1987, has a fascinating history that dates back to the late 80s. The story began when Thomas, a student at the University of Michigan, started working on a program called Display to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This initial project caught the attention of his brother John, who was an Industrial Light & Magic employee, and recommended that Thomas turn it into a full-fledged image editing program.

Thomas took a six-month break from his studies in 1988 to collaborate with his brother on the program, which they renamed ImagePro at first. However, the name was already taken, so they decided to come up with something new. In the same year, they sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated, marking the beginning of a long and successful partnership.

Over the years, Photoshop has undergone significant changes in its naming scheme, from version numbers to CS (Creative Suite) suffixes. The program was initially released as Photoshop CS and subsequent versions were designated with increasing numbers, such as Photoshop CS2. In 2002, Adobe introduced Creative Suite branding, which led to the introduction of 'CS' plus a number for each new version.

In June 2013, Adobe made another significant change by switching to a software-as-a-service rental model and replacing the 'CS' suffixes with 'CC'. Today, Photoshop remains one of the most popular raster graphics editors on the market, used by professionals and hobbyists alike for its impressive range of features and editing capabilities.
